Exhibition of Degenerated Art
These are some artworks that were being presented in the exhibition

Exhibition of Degenerated Art, in Munich, 1917, was an exhibition organized by Hitler and the Nazi party. Over 650 paintings, sculptures, prints, and books considered ‘degenerated’ were displayed. The Nazis believed during the Weimar, Jewish influences have contaminated art, music, and literature and degenerated works were created. The purpose of this exhibition was to clarify to the population what type of artworks are considered acceptable and what are not. In the end these ‘degenerated’ artworks were sold abroad through auctions, burned, or destroyed during Allie bombings. Artists and authors were also arrested or experienced different forms of discriminations. Consequently, some masterpieces were never seen again and forty years of German achievements in art, music and literature were lost forever.

The exhibition's organizer, Alfred Ziegler, made a speach on the opening day and in his speech he said:
"All around us you see the monstrous offspring of insanity, impudence, ineptitude, and sheer degeneracy. What this exhibition offers inspires horror and disgust in all of us." On the walls of the exhibition, there were propagandistic slogans painted everywhere:
“The cultural Bolsheviks order of Battle,” “Nature as seen by sick minds,” and “Revelations of the Jewish Racial Soul.” |
